Charlotte County dates back to 1921.
According to the history books, the name "Charlotte" came from the word Calos referred to Calusa Indian. The Spanish named Carlos Bay in 1565. The English in 1775 then named the area Charlotte Harbor in tribute to the Queen Charlotte Sophia, wife of King George III. Punta Gorda is the only incorporated city in Charlotte County.
