Population
The U.S. Census Bureau reported the Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) of Charlotte County as the fastest growing county in the United States during the 1980-90 period. The population of the Punta Gorda metropolitan area is over 133,000 in the unincorporated areas and a population of over 16,000 in the city of Punta Gorda. CNN Money magazine named Charlotte County as the Best Place in the South, Best Small Place to Live in America and overall Second Best Place to Live in America. Punta Gorda rates very highly with Forbes, MSN, Sperling and Men's Health magazine as a best place to live or retire. Other top financial publications praise the quailty of life in Punta Gorda.
Recreation
Charlotte County is known for its recreational opportunities. It has a total of 70 parks and recreation areas. The county has 12.5 miles of gulf coast beaches along the length of its barrier islands. There are 15 public beach access points. Beautiful gulf front Don Pedro Island State Park is accessible only by boat. There are approximately 28 marinas and 13 boat ramps located along the Peace River, Cape Haze Peninsula, Lemon Bay and Placida Harbor areas. Numerous canals wind through major residential subdivisions and provide access to the open waters of Charlotte Harbor and the Gulf of Mexico. The area is a waterfront paradise. Punta Gorda is host to the Redfish Cup fishing tournament.

Beaches
The Punta Gorda area is an easy drive to some of the world's best beaches.

Boca Grande - Located on the barrier island of Gasparilla. Boca Grande Florida is carefully preserved in the tradition of old Florida. Located on the Southwest coast northwest of Punta Gorda, Boca Grande is a noted for its beaches, waterfront estates and its reputation as the tarpon fishing capital of the world.
Manasota Key - located between Englewood and Sarasota. This area has beautiful Gulf beaches.
Englewood Beach - just across the bridge from Englewood and an easy drive from Punta Gorda.
Sarasota Beaches
Siesta Key - a must see white sand beach in Sarasota area.
Venice Beach - a charming island beach, don't miss the Island shops.
Sanibel and Captiva - a renowned tourist destination. This area is a must see. Many wonderful restaurants, shops, accommodations, fabulous beaches, nature preserve and the shell museum.
Fort Myers Beach - an active beach area.
Naples - has it all- beaches, shopping, wonderful restaurants.
 
Arts and Culture
Culture abounds in the area; from the Port Charlotte Cultural Center, the Visual Arts Center and the Charlotte Symphony, to the many cultural events in Sarasota, Fort Myers and Naples. Punta Gorda is a short drive to museums, theatre, concerts and fine dining.

Punta Gorda Florida (translated "Broad Point") is centrally located approximately 100 miles south of Tampa on Florida's west coast. A charming historic waterfront town, Punta Gorda Florida lies midway between Sarasota and Fort Myers Florida with easy access from I-75. Punta Gorda is about 20 miles north of Cape Coral.
